Kilim Carpet

An Iranian Kilim Carpet is a colorful nomadic carpet with typical regional pattern to which the manufacturing nomadic people are inspired by nature and their daily lives. The material of the Kilim consists largely of sheep wool and is dyed with vegetable colors. Kilim rugs have a very durable and robust nature. A Kilim rug is caused by everyday use and with the years even more interesting and more beautiful and therefore can be a companion for lifetime. Iranian Kilims are produced primarily by nomads.

Floor covering

Kilims are important for the identity and wealth of nomadic tribe-people. In their traditional setting they are used as floor and wall coverings, bedding and cushion covers, horse-saddles, bags, etc. Persian kilims are also excellent as use as wall hangings, similar to tapestries they are light weight and decorative pieces. The most common Iranian Kilims are: Sirjan Kilim, Senneh Kilim, Fars Kilim and Ghashghai Kilim. The fibers used in Iranian carpets and Kilims are lightweight and free of chemical smells.

Kilim Weaving

When making a Kilim the patterns are created by the weft yarns and the pattern in the carpet is created when you turn the actual yarn. When you turn the yarn a small cavity is created which should not be too large. Using this technique creates the traditional step-like pattern that characterizes Kilims and the persian carpet looks the same on both sides.
Normally the yarn ends are hidden, but there are other ways of producing Kilims where the yarns hang freely on the back of the carpet.

Kilim Color

Kilim colors may be natural or artificial. One way to recognize a natural color from an artificial one is using a wipes on the Kilim. If you use the wipes and it gets color, the colors used in the kilim are artificial, but if it doesn't get color, the color used is natural.

Kilim Materials

Natural fibers such as cotton, silk, wool or a combination of them are often used, in weaving a Kilim. High quality wools obtained from special races of sheep or cattle are used as raw materials of Carpets and woolen Kilim.

Beautiful handmade Iranian tribal Kilim rugs are finely decorative pieces of ancient arts representing the ethnic backgrounds of a nation. Kilim Rugs are recognized for their specific geometrical shapes and particular handicraft arts of the artists.

Kilim History

The art of carpet weaving in Iran dates backs to 2,500 years. The kilim colors were usually extracted from flowers. The term Kilim originates from the Persian Gelim where it means 'to spread roughly', perhaps of Mongolian origin. Iranian carpets are similar to the Persian garden; full of floras and birds.

Caution

Kilims are usually washed and cleaned with a carpet shampoo. Washing small Kilims with hands have better results. Kilim with natural colors, will have more protection against the sunlight. If the kilim materials are unnatural or unstandard, the kilim will lose its color after exposing to the sunlight.

Buy Kilim

Kilim rugs are hardwearing items and therefore suitable as the living room rugs or dining room rugs. It is better to buy a Kilim with many knots on back part of it. You can also buy a Kilim that has leathers on its edges. Kilim can be used as floor covering, bedspreads, picnic blankets or as wall hangings.
