Ghalamkari (Calico)

Hand Painted

Persian Ghalamkari, one of the Iranian handicrafts, is a type of textile printing patterned fabric. The fabric is printed using patterned wooden stamps made of pear wood which has better flexibility and density for carving and long-standing utility. A tapestry may be stamped depending on its density and size, between hundreds and tens of thousands of times. For example 2 meters by 1.4 meters should be stamped about 580 times up to 4000 times in an elegant work. Ghalamkari name is derived from the words pen and kari craftsmanship meaning drawing with a pen. Isfahan is considered the heart of Ghalamkari art in Iran.

In making black color some materials such as: Gum tragacanth, Iron Oxide, Castor oil and for Red color materials such as Rose, Alum, and Gum tragacanth are used. Sometimes mixed colors such as blue, green, yellow and brown colors are appropriately used. Calico makers use a wide range of materials.
