Kilim Persian Handicrafts

Kilims are a type of rug that is usually made from wool that is interwoven rather than knotted; this means that the surface is ‘flat’ instead of having a ‘pile’. Vegetable dyed wool is the normal fiber used when making Kilims and this is woven using woolen warps and wefts. In recent years weavers are replacing wool with cotton as this tends to give a stronger and more secure foundation for the rug.

The art of carpet weaving in Iran dates backs to 2,500 years and is rooted in the culture and customs of its people and their instinctive feelings. Weavers mix elegant patterns with a myriad of colors. The Iranian carpet is similar to the Persian garden: full of floras, birds and beasts. The colors are usually extracted from wild flowers, and are rich in colors such as burgundy, navy blue and accents of ivory. The proto-fabric is often washed in tea to soften the texture, giving it a unique quality. The term 'Kilim' originates from the Persian Gelim where it means 'to spread roughly', perhaps of Mongolian origin.

Kilims are usually washed and cleaned with a carpet shampoo. Notice that washing small Kilims with hands have better results.
Kilim rugs are hardwearing items and therefore suitable as the living room rugs or dining room rugs.
If you are thinking about putting Kilim on your ceramics, one of the major problems that you will think about it is continuous sliding of Kilim on the ceramic. To prevent this problem, it is better to buy a Kilim with many knots on back part of it. You can also buy a Kilim that has leathers on its edges.
Costs of the Kilims generally vary with its size per square meter and fabrics used in its crafting.
Kilim can be used as floor covering, bedspreads, picnic blankets or as wall hangings.
Kilim with natural colors, will have more protection against the sunlight. In other hands, if the materials used were unnatural and non-standard, they will lose their color and attraction immediately after exposing to the sunlight.
One of the important ways of recognizing a natural color from an artificial one is using a wipes on the Kilim. If you use the wipes and it gets color, the colors used in the carpet is artificial, but if it did not get colored, the color used is natural. So having a wipes is very essential when buying a Kilim.
