Kalporegan Village for 7000 Years-Old Pottery

Kalporegan is a village in Sistan and Balouchistan Province of Iran that is well-known for its earthenware and traditional production method being continuously maintained. In 2017, this village was registered on World Crafts Council (WCC) list as the first handicraft village in the world for Pottery. Kalporegan Clay Living Museum is located in the heart of the village and can be considered the most famous spot for tourists. The art of pottery in this village dates back to more than 7000 years ago and this magnificent art has remained intact during the course of history by being inherited generations to generations over thousands of years. There is no chemical material in the products so it is eco friendly. Pottery performed by hand and local tools is performed just by women. It is based on their mental pattern making. Women have learned the pottery as a profession from their ancestors and this local knowledge of pottery has been maintained and transferred from one generation to the next, as a local culture. The names which are selected for patterns, are considered as a part of Baluchi cultural identity. It is the unique exercise for the women to create wonderful artifacts out of dust and mud, using only their hands and not any tools like pottery-making machines. In fact, the only tool they use is a manganese stone which they call it TITUK to draw patterns on potteries which resemble ancient decorations.
