The City of Pioneers is an unofficial motto for Tabriz, a major city and provincial capital in north west of Iran. The motto is given because of the pioneering role of the city in modernization signs in Iran; and its leading role in movement toward the formation of modern Iran. Live and Historical Bazaar
The Bazaar of Tabriz is a historical market situated in the city center of Tabriz, Iran. It is one of the oldest bazaars in the Middle East and the largest covered bazaar in the world. Tabriz historic bazaar complex is one of the most important commercial centres on the Silk Road. A bazaar has existed on the same site since the early periods of Iranian urbanism following Islam. The bazaar was mentioned by the Venetian traveler Marco Polo, who claimed to have passed through it while journeying on the Silk Road. You can walk through Tabriz Bazaar for hours, drinking tea, looking at shops and enjoy your time. The bazaar is used for some important religious ceremonies. The most famous one is Day of Ashura during which merchants cease trading for about 10 days and religious ceremonies are held inside the bazaar. Like other bazaars in Middle East, there are several mosques constructed behind the bazaar.

The Blue Mosque or Masjed-e Kabud is a historic mosque in Tabriz, Iran. There are at least 4 "Blue Mosques" in the world: Tabriz, Istanbul, Afghanistan and Yerevan. The Blue Mosque in Tabriz has been built about 550 years ago. The most outstanding features of this Mosque are: its special blue tiles in Northern façade, the large dome that spans a large area of about 30 m by 30 m and double layered roofing made up of bricks and some special hydraulic mortar.
Tabriz Arg-e Alishah
A Great History behind it
Arg of Tabriz (Arg Alishah) is the remnants of a large acropolis fortification and city wall in downtown Tabriz, Iran. The bulding was initially a compound, containing a great vaulted mosque, adjoining prayer halls and libraries, a vast courtyard containing a huge reflecting pool, and a mausoleum—all surrounded by a containing wall. It was built in 14th century during the Ilkhanate era. The point of pride for the building was that its vaulted ayvan was larger than the famous historic vault of Chosroes/Kisra or the Taq Kisra at Ctesiphon/Mada'in. In the 19th century with the rise of tensions between Iran and Russia the citadel rapidly turned into the city's fort and additional military installations such as a barracks and cannon foundry were added to the original structure. During the twentieth century the military installations were removed from original construction and the surrounding of the ark turned into a park. In the late twentieth century a big mosque was built next to the citadel.
Tabriz Jameh Mosque
Jameh Mosque is one of the most beautiful attraction places in Tabriz that must be seen by any visitors. It is located in south west of the Tabriz Bazaar and just connected to Bazaar. Actually the Mosque is a complex which in addition to the Mosque there is a building which is used as a school of Islamic theology, there is a pretty green yard between the Mosque and school. Beautiful Iranian Islamic architecture can be seen in all parts of the Mosque. It is a mosque with a very tall minarets and a brick that is guarded at the entrance of the alley. It is possible to enter the Bazaar through the inside of its courtyard. This mosque is peaceful and a good place to just relax and enjoy the architect.
Tabriz Azerbaijan Museum
The Azerbaijan Museum, the second archaeological museum after the National Museum of Iran, is situated next to the Blue Mosque. It boasts a diverse collection that includes ancient artifacts from both before and after the Islamic period, as well as artworks and sculptures by contemporary artists. Some of the ancient artifacts date back approximately four to five thousand years, features pottery from the Ilkhanid period, ancient coins and seals, and remains of individuals from before Christ, alongside historical stone figures. In the basement, visitors can admire exquisite statues that illustrate the stories and morals of past civilizations. At the entrance, two stone lions welcome guests. Additionally, the museum houses a library with over 2,500 books, both handwritten and printed, are focusing on Iranian culture.
Tabriz Mausoleum of the Poets
The Mausoleum of the Poets is an ancient cemetery located in the Surkhab district of Tabriz, specifically in the Sarkhak neighborhood near the Qajar Museum. This site has served as a burial place for renowned figures, including classical and contemporary poets, mystics, scientists, and other notable individuals throughout history. Over the past eight hundred years, more than 400 distinguished Iranian figures have been interred here, among them the famous Khaghani, Hemam Tabrizi, Hakim Asadi Tusi, and Master Shahriar. Following the earthquakes of 1193 and 1194 in the Islamic calendar, many graves were destroyed, leading to the cemetery's abandonment. In September 1971, a competition was held to design a memorial building, with Gholamreza Farzanmehr's design being selected for construction. Today, visitors can see several statues and busts of the poets buried here, along with the voice of Master Shahriar reciting his poem "Heydar Baba" echoing in the environment. The grave of Master Shahriar is centrally located within the structure, featuring the famous couplet "You came, my life, to your sacrifice, but why now?" inscribed beneath his photo. Additionally, one part of the area offers handicrafts from Tabriz for sale.
Tabriz Kandovan
The village of Kandovan, located in the southwest of Tabriz in Esko region, is also known as “Goon Doqan†(the place of sunrise) due to its position along the path of the sunrise. With a history spanning 6,000 years, Kandovan features rock-cut houses that are approximately 700 years old. Early inhabitants, believed to be from the nearby village of Hilevar, sought refuge from the Mongols and began hand-carving shelters into the heart of the mountain. The village is characterized by its unique structure, resembling a collection of protrusions akin to sugar loaves, which are situated on the mountain's slope. These cavities, excavated within the volcanic rocks, serve as the residences of the villagers and are locally referred to as Karaan. The formation of these sugar loaves is attributed to the deposition of volcanic ash from Mount Sahand. While similar formations can be found in Turkey and America, Kandovan remains distinctive as it is still inhabited, showcasing remarkable manmade cliff dwellings.
Tabriz Nobar Bathhouse
The Nobar Bathhouse in Tabriz is one of the magnificent structures from the Qajar era, which currently operates as the first and largest traditional teahouse in Tabriz. Notable features of the building include the large arch and dome of the hot room, the arch and dome with stone columns and intricately carved capitals in the entrance hall, as well as the implementation of structural arches, a combination of brick and tile, and a muqarnas ceiling. The Nobar Bathhouse showcases a blend of geometric shapes that create an attractive architecture for this structure. The entrance hall of the bathhouse has an octagonal base, while the octagonal hall and octagonal pool are examples of these geometric forms. The stone columns used in this architectural masterpiece have attracted many tourists. The Nobar Bathhouse is located in the Clock Square of Tabriz and is currently active under the name "Shahriar Traditional Teahouse." To make optimal use of all areas of the bathhouse, the entrance hall and hot room are utilized as a teahouse, while the rooftop serves as a tea house and a venue for storytelling and puppet shows.
Tabriz Measurement Museum
The Measurement Museum, with over 160 years of history, is one of the museums in Tabriz, and its building dates back to the Qajar era. Located in the Salmasi House, it is the only measurement museum in Iran. This museum showcases various weighing instruments, such as goldsmith scales, large balances, weights, different oil measuring cups, astronomical tools like astrolabes, meteorological instruments, compasses, and various clocks. The tools in this museum are centuries old, and we can observe the progress and evolution of these instruments. Notable items in the museum include a 5-million-year-old tree trunk from the Pliocene era, a century-old gas station pump, the first generation of hand-cranked calculators, and a historical clock from ancient Roman emperors.
Tabriz Moharram Museum
The Moharram Museum of Tabriz is located in the historical Sahati House, which features Qajar architecture. This house, built with a brick facade over three floors, was used as a Hosseiniyeh (a place for mourning ceremonies) during the lifetime of Dr. Abolghasem Sahati and throughout the early Pahlavi period. Large groups of mourners from various neighborhoods in Tabriz would come to this place to hold their ceremonies. Today, the museum houses artifacts related to the rituals and ceremonies of Ashura and Moharram, such as a statue of Zuljanah, various ceremonial headpieces, flags, small cradles for offerings, lamps and candles, tools and writings related to mourning and Ta'ziyeh performances, old paintings, a copper bowl engraved with the names of the Fourteen Infallibles, an axe used in ritual performances, and a flag featuring the image of Imam Ali. Additionally, during the month of Moharram, the museum hosts Quran recitations, speeches, mourning ceremonies, and recitations of elegies.
Tabriz Stone Carpet
The Tabriz Ipak Project includes a stone carpet in the Ipak Grand Square (formerly known as Mansour), which is considered the first and largest stone carpet in the world. The design of the Tabriz stone carpet, which is spread across the center of the square, is inspired by a historical carpet design. This historical carpet, featuring a beautiful garden pattern, is preserved in the Iran Carpet Museum and dates back to the 11th century in the Iranian calendar. In the center of the square, there are green spaces and fountains that enhance the beauty of this carpet manifold. Located along the historic Silk Road (the route from Ray to Istanbul), this carpet is one of the attractions of the city of Tabriz.
